Healthy Eating Habits, Sweet Potatoes, and Pumpkin

Healthy eating habits should be one of your most important habits. Some past diets, such as the fat free diet, the cabbage soup and grapefruit diet, and the Atkins diet, are not good for you nor your body. As people ate more and more fat-free goods, they began to get extra high doses of other ingredients that are really bad for you. The cabbage soup and grapefruit diets made you gain weight just as quickly as you lost it, and the Atkins diet seemed to produce inflammation and irritation to the body. We were all once told that chocolate, wine, nuts, salt, and coffee were extremely bad and unhealthy for you. This is found to be untrue, in some cases. They can be beneficial to your body in several ways, but if you take advantage of that, they will become a problem. Coffee is healthy because it is the number one source of antioxidants in the south. The label "Fat Free" is not necessarily a good thing. This label granted absolution to anyone who indulged and gave the illusion that portion size and sugar content didn't matter. What was lost in taste and texture had to be compensated for by adding more sodium, sugar, and thickeners. Many foods are unhealthy, or "used to be" unhealthy. Two foods that were once thought to be unhealthy are whole grains and dairy products. They are now known to have health benefits, they both can help decrease the risk of certain cancers and heart disease. In some cases, some milks are healthier and better for you than others. Whole milk isn't the healthiest for you but it might be okay to drink in moderation because it can help control weight; the calorie load swamps the health benefits. Berries have been shown to reduce the odds of cancer, diabetes, and mental decline. Exercise is obviously a great idea to keep in shape and balance your diet and the amount of food and nutrition you need. All adults should get a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week(20 min. daily), or 75 min. a week of vigorous activity, muscle-strengthening exercises two or more a week would also be healthy.

This week we made sweet potato bisque and pumpkin scones.

                                                                   POTATO BISQUE
Sweet potatoes contain many healthy ingredients and nutrients. Some categories are antioxidants, anti-inflammatory nutrients, and blood sugar-regulating nutrients. This recipe turned out to be alright. It was not my favorite but it tasted a lot better that I thought it was going to be.

                                                                PUMPKIN SCONES

Pumpkin has several health benefits as well, some of which include alpha-carotene and beta-carotene which are potent antioxidants found in pumpkin and are pro-vitamin A carotenoids. Our scones turned out perfect. They were fantastic and a very nice treat. Although it is not part of the recipe, we added some chocolate chips to give it a little kick, which was a great choice.
